The Tower of London

Although it was my second time visiting the Tower of London, I still can’t say I’ve spent enough time there or seen it all. Visiting it out of season, however meant crowds were low and we didn’t even have to queue to see the Crown Jewels. Unheard of during the Summer peak season.

The Tower of London is one of those places you immediately sense the history within its walls. Standing on the bank of the Thames River for nearly 1000 years, this iconic London landmark has seen a lot of historical moments. The last time I visited, I wasn’t as much of a Tudor history fan as I am now, and with a lot more understanding of that period of time in history, it particularly made a visit to the Tower much more poignant. However, there is so much more to the Tower than Anne Boleyn, although you will find many people only know it as the place where she lost her head in May 1536. Inevitably, that section of the Tower grounds is quite a popular place for quiet reflection.

Crown Jewels

Another popular section is where the Crown Jewels reside. They have been within the Tower walls since the 1660s and comprise more than 100 objects. The most famous being the St Edward’s Crown, which is used in a new sovereign’s coronation so expect to see it on the head of Charles III when his time comes. You will find this section of the Tower is one of the most popular, so if you’re going in peak season, I would suggest to visit the Tower early in the day and head straight to this area.

Ceremony of the Keys

If you have the chance, don’t miss out on attending the Ceremony of the Keys, a ceremony which has taken place every night at 9.30pm for over 700 years. Essentially, you are viewing the traditional ‘locking up’ of the Tower. Tickets for the ceremony sell out almost as soon as they are released, and they must be booked online.
